Participation for Children Ages 12 and Below in SYYAM

SYYAM responds to a need for intergenerational ministry in a parish, calling forth participation of the entire family, not just the teens. Intergenerational ministry strengthens the parish as a whole. There are programs that SYYAM includes children ages 12 and below, particularly with the Youth Mass Team. The Youth Mass Team is a vital part of SYYAM because it strives to incorporate valid and active youth and young adult participation in the Mass in various parts such as the Choir, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers and Hospitality. We will expound upon the Youth Mass Team later.

SYYAM plays a vital role in channeling competent youth and young adult leaders to assist in CCD grades Pre-K through 8th grade. Leaders are also available to assist in Children's Liturgy and Vacation Bible School, while creating and facilitating recollections for pre-teens and children, inspiring the entire family to become involved with general parish activities.

A parent interested in allowing the child (12 and below) to participate in the SYYAM facilitated activities should understand the following things:

  1. Parents who wish their younger children to get involved should fill out the appropriate forms before allowing their child to participate and familiarize themselves with the SYYAM Handbook.
  2. SYYAM facilitated activities for children are aligned with SYYAM mission and goals (for example: A parents should desire their child to join the Youth Mass Team not just for the sake of singing in front of people but with the understanding that they are becoming members of a ministry that strives to lead the congregation to worship Christ Jesus in the Eucharist).
  3. SYYAM facilitated activities for children are not meant to be used as a "baby-sitting service".
  4. Parents who wish to be involved in SYYAM facilitated activities for children are required to abide by the Diocese of Honolulu Guidelines for working with minors.
