To be adults means to be 18 or above and can either be married or single. When we use the term "Adult" alongside of the term "Young Adult", we refer to adults who are ages 35 and above.

The advantages of having adults in YM or YAM

• Adults have life experiences that are useful for youth and young adults to learn from
• Single and married adults in good standing with the Church serve as good role models for youth and young adults

The following are conditions for an adult to be a leader in SYYAM:

1. Must be a member of SHWAY CORPS

   What is SHWAY CORPS

   The SHWAY CORPS are leaders of SHWAY Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Leaders are required to complete certain objectives during leadership cycles.

   Expectations

   • All leaders must be able to ascertain personally if they are called by God
   • Leaders must have a desire to serve
   • Leaders must have the ability to complete necessary objectives during leadership cycles

2. Must be a member of the Catholic Church and in good standing with the Church
3. Must attend the Initial Certification for Safe Environment and must renew certification on a yearly basis at www.shieldthevulnerable.org with Coordinator's permission
4. Must undergo criminal background check at www.shieldthevulnerable.org with Coordinator's persmission
5. Must fill out and submit the Diocesan Volunteeer Code of Conduct form
6. Must fill out and submit the SYYAM Adult Registration form
7. Must be well versed in the SHWAY form of ministry by being well versed in the SHWAY Handbook
8. When facilitating in YM, must follow strict adherence to rules regarding transportation and after communication with youth

Conditions for an Adult Leader to be able to communicate with a youth after Youth Ministry hours:

• Condition 1: Participant must have submitted a properly filled out form by the parent or legal guardian clearly indicating that the youth is able to communicate with that adult leader.
• Condition 2: The Coordinator must have full knowledge of any type of communication everytime.
• Condition 3: The parents/legal guardians must have full knowledge of the communication.
• Condition 4: The adult leader must be a member of the SHWAY CORPS.
• Condition 5: The adult leader and youth participants must be in the same tribe.
• Condition 6: The adult leaders must have taken Compliance Classes of Recognizing Child Abuse and Safe Environment within the last 3 years.
• Condition 7: All communication (including internet, email, text messaging, cell and home phone) must be pertaining to ministry and happen no later than 10:00pm. If text messaging is used, it must be done outside of school hours.

If one of these 7 conditions is absent, Adult Youth Ministry Leader's participation in the leadership may be compromised at the discretion of the Coordinator and/or the Pastor.
