Define the Terms "Youth and Young Adult"

 

a) What is the difference between a youth and young adult?

A youth is a participant in youth ministry that is 18 years old and still in high or middle school. A young adult is any leader 18 years of age and above and out of high school. Young adults are not allowed to be present at youth ministry calendar events unless they are members of the SHWAY CORPS and attend the yearly safe compliance classes provided by the Diocese of Honolulu.

There are 3 classifications of young adults between the ages of 18-35:

  • Tier 1: These are adults who just graduated from high school and are entering college life.
  • Tier 2: These are adults who just graduated from college and are entering a working field.
  • Tier 3: These are adults who have a family and stable job.

b) What is Youth Ministry (YM)?

  • It is a team of youth (7th-12th grade) and stable adults that work together to serve the needs of the parish community and beyond, guided by the parish mission and youth ministry goals, tending to the apostolate, communication, social, spiritual and worship needs of youth.
  • It produces programs that empower participants to be spiritual leaders in the parish and the community at large.
  • It serves as an advocate for parents, teachers and civil leaders.
  • It plays the role as translator between adults and youth.
  • It is a collaborator and supplement of the Confirmation preparation process.
  • It is for youth from 7th to 12th grade.
  • It is a Eucharistic centered community, working hand in hand with Marian Devotion.
  • It serves as a 24/7 spiritual sanctuary for youth in crisis.
  • It gives participants a chance to reflect upon moral and social justice issues in the world inspiring to take initiative in making the world a better place.
  • It helps youth to live the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
  • Youth Ministry is a team effort consisting of stable adults and empowered youth. In the recent years, the Diocese of Honolulu has mandated that all adult volunteers (18 yrs., out of high school and above) and youth leaders (18 yrs., high school teens and below) working with children be required to attend compliance classes on Safe Environment and Recognizing Child Abuse.

c) What is Young Adult Ministry (YAM)?

  • It consists of young adults discerning their vocation to the single, married or religious life.
  • It is a collaborator of Youth Ministry through the SHWAY CORPS.
  • It provides a Christ centered community for young adults.
  • It empowers young adults to have a mature relationship with Christ.
  • It is a place for those interested in becoming Catholic to 'sample' the faith.
  • It is an invitation for Catholics who left to return home.
  • It is a place of renewal.
  • It is a place to meet other Catholic young adults in and outside the parish.
